Harbor seals are large mammals that can grow up to 55 feet tall. They are easily recognizable by their huge heads and prominent, rounded temples, but despite their size, these large predators are vulnerable.

Scientists claim that these whales have the greatest intelligence of any living creature in existence. Perhaps it was this intelligence that allowed the whale to ask for help from a diver.

As huge as they are, these whales are tame and only feast on squid when they dive to the depths of the sea.

The diver is Hugues Vitry, who is a world-renowned Mauritian environmentalist and professional underwater photographer, and in this video he just removed a small hook from the whale’s lower jaw. The whale swims close to Vitry, moving its large body sideways before opening its mouth to show the diver that it needs help. A small hook caused this big whale a nuisance. Imagine what larger objects can do.

Vitry said the hook was by the whale’s teeth, so he was able to get it out of the whale’s mouth with some force. The huge mammal remained calm the entire time.

Vitry was scared himself when the whale seemed to move a bit after trying to reassure the creature that it was over. In return, the whale seemed to thank him!
